Lesson: Gratitude
Otto's old dog Pudding won't fetch like Zip, the speedy puppy next door. After a busy afternoon of play, Otto finds Pudding waiting by the gate. He notices something about her he is quietly glad of, and he shows it in his own way.

For parents & caregivers
Otto wants his old dog Pudding to chase the red ball, but Pudding just sighs and lies down. When his neighbor Mira invites him to play with her fast new puppy, Zip, Otto has a wonderful, busy time, even when Zip runs off with his sun hat. When Zip dashes away after leaves, Otto hears the clink of Pudding's collar and sees her lying by the gate gap, waiting for him. He realizes Pudding always waits: by the front door, outside the bath and beside his bed at night. Otto chooses to go home, scratch her favorite ear spot and tell her he likes that she always waits. Then he invents 'Pudding fetch', rolling the ball slowly so she can hold it with her paw. Gratitude appears as Otto's own noticing and his unprompted choice to show it. No adult tells him to be thankful. His enjoyment of Zip is not dismissed, and Pudding is never asked to change. There is no lecture or moral summary.
