Lesson: Patience

For parents & caregivers
After supper, Rosa sees the first snow of winter. Mama agrees to a short trip into the garden before bed. Rosa is dressed in seconds, but her little brother Pim is still on the bottom stair with one red boot, insisting, 'Myself.' Rosa hurries him, tries to do it for him and calls him slow, and the flustered boot sticks halfway. When Rosa worries the snow will be gone, Mama honestly says it usually keeps falling for a good while. She adds that Pim's feet are still learning and hurrying makes it harder, then lets Pim choose to keep trying. Rosa notices that her rushing made the boot stick. She sits beside Pim without touching his boot and describes the snow outside so he won't miss anything. Pim calms down and gets both boots on, though on the wrong feet. He declares them cozy, and Rosa chooses not to swap them. Pim asks Mama for help with his mitten thumbs, and the siblings step out hand in hand to make the very first footprints together. The story ends with their two trails, one straight and one duck-footed, as the snow keeps falling. Patience appears as understanding why something takes time and choosing a kinder way to wait alongside someone, while impatience is allowed to remain. There is no scolding, prize or moral summary.
