Felix and Juno want to build a house for the hedgehog that visits Gran's garden at night. Juno wants it warm and Felix wants a way in. When they stop and listen to each other's reasons, they build something better together before the sky goes grey.

For parents & caregivers
A hedgehog has been visiting Gran's garden at night. Felix and his next-door friend Juno decide to turn an old upside-down apple crate into a hedgehog house before dusk. Juno is sure the house needs to be warm and stuffs it with leaves. Felix is sure it needs a way in and presses a flat stone in as a doorstep. Each idea blocks the other. Leaves go in and out until both children feel cross. Juno stops and asks why the door matters so much. Felix explains that a house you can't get into is 'just a box full of leaves.' Juno explains her own reason with a picture from her bedtime: burrowing to the bottom of her bed with just her nose sticking out. Hearing each other's reasons, they invent a plan neither had alone: a leaf bed at the back and a clear hallway at the front. They build it together, with one lifting while the other moves leaves and one holding steady while the other digs. They test it with Gran's bristly boot brush and fix a slipping bed with a stick. At dusk they watch from the window as a small round shape steps onto the doorstep and goes inside. Gran provides only materials and a time frame. Cooperation appears through listening and making room for both ideas, without a lecture or moral summary.
